The most prestigious Honors Program opportunity is the Gold Seal level. This requires the completion of at least 27 semester hours of Honors courses, plus the Personal&Professional Development series (3 credits). A majority of these courses will take the place of General Education courses or additional special topics or Honors Independent Research projects. Students who complete all Citadel Honors Program requirements for their major will be recognized as Honors Program graduates in their college commencement ceremony. They will receive an Honors Program certificate plus an Honors Gold Seal on their Citadel diploma. A notation will be added to their official college transcript to indicate they have completed the most demanding Honors Program requirements.
Students admitted to The Citadel Honors Program after their first semester at The Citadel or those pursuing a double major, leaving available time to only complete the Honors Program Certificate. Honors Program Certificate students will be required to complete at least 18 semester hours of Honors courses, plus the Personal&Professional Development series (3 credits). They will be recognized as Honors Program participants in their commencement ceremony, and a notation will be added to their official college transcript to indicate that they have fulfilled these minimal requirements of the Honors Program.
To remain in good standing, students in The Citadel Honors Program must maintain at least a 3.00 GPA in Honors courses and a 3.00 GPA overall. Additionally, all Honors Program students will exhibit conduct becoming of a cadet. The Honors Council will review the records of all Honors students after each semester and take appropriate action. Students who fall below these standards may be discharged from the Honors Program or placed on Academic Probation.
Most of the Honors Program courses are designed to be taken in lieu of General Education requirements; any additional Honors courses will take the place of General Electives. A full description of the requirements for both tracks can be found at the Course Requirement Checklist.
